Roy Cooper said a Republic National Convention is unlikely to occur as organizers want as the conditions in the state amid the COVID-19 pandemic continue to change.The governor released a letter he sent to the RNC after the group said it wanted a “full convention” with 19,000 in attendance.“As much as want the conditions surround COVID-19 to be favorable enough for you to hold the Convention you describe in late August, it is very unlikely,” Cooper wrote.Cooper says the RNC had acknowledged that a scaled down convention was needed for the health and safety of “participants and North Carolinians.”“From my conversations with the President and with the RNC over the last week, discussions about a scaled-down convention have stopped,” Cooper said at a press conference Tuesday.North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley said Tuesday that the governor and other state officials should be giving clearer guidance to the RNC on what conditions the organization will need to meet in order to be able to hold the convention.“We need the governor to provide assurances that we can move forward,” said Whatley. “The RNC has not received any guidance from Gov. Cooper that indicates holding an in-person convention will be possible.”President Donald Trump last week tweeted that he wanted a guarantee that full attendance would be allowed. In a letter Saturday, RNC officials said that means accommodating 19,000 people at the Spectrum Center. In that letter, the RNC requested to know by Wednesday, June 3, if hosting a full convention is possible.Tuesday’s development comes after a continued back-and-forth between North Carolina leaders and the RNC.After Cooper’s letter was released, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said the RNC will begin visiting other cities that could play host for them.Charlotte could still host the convention.A convention spokesperson told CBS17, “We intend to conduct the business of the Republican Party here in Charlotte and will continue to make health and safety a top priority.”✕× Close Ad
