These officers of the Minnesota State Police were told explicitly that these were members of the press with CNN, that the camera was rolling, that their actions were being broadcast to the nation—and, inevitably, to the world. The CNN reporters say they'd already moved back once to get out of the way of an advancing line of police trying to restore order early Friday morning, after another night of . The on-air reporter, Omar Jimenez, was professional—even cordial—and said repeatedly that the crew would like to do whatever the cops asked in order to get out of their way, while still reporting on what was going on. The street was clear, except for dozens of cops in riot gear. There was no pressing threat.But the officers really didn't hesitate. They arrested Jimenez, and the rest of the crew, and later told the camera operator that it was because they'd refused to move out of the way. But it's on video: the CNN crew repeatedly offered to move wherever the cops wanted them to. The officers knew the interaction was recorded—and broadcast already!—and still lied about it. The lies continued after, as posted a claim that the journalists had been arrested "in the course of clearing the streets and restoring order." But the street was clear! Jimenez's CNN colleague, Josh Campbell, and was also approached by the cops and when he said he was a reporter with CNN they left him alone. Campbell is white. It seems like there's a lesson to be learned here, like there is when you compare this situation . "We're just out here doing our job as well as you are," the camera operator said as he was being handcuffed here. But these officers, and one suspects many American police in general, don't seem to see it that way. It's a startling view of this country's democratic decay in recent years, the decline—verging on collapse—of our core principles in the face of a growing authoritarian impulse. This looks like something out of Hong Kong, or some other place where Americans occasionally feign concern for beleaguered free peoples, fighting for free lives, against the totalitarian fist. We have not seen the last of this in the summer to come.
