But authorities see that as a good thing."We were pleasantly surprised there were very few violators out there," said Eric Wolf, enforcement commander with the OIU. "Most of the locations out there were doing what they could to provide a safe environment."The OIU issued nine citations against bars statewide since May 12, when retail first could reopen during the pandemic. The first four days bars and restaurants could serve indoors, from May 21-25 including Memorial Day weekend, additional law enforcement helped the OIU investigators visit 2,626 bars across Ohio, about 10% of the total number of establishments with liquor licenses statewide.Wolf wouldn't say how many agents were in the field. They would show up to bars, in plainclothes, and just observe.The enforcement action resulted in 38 warnings for minor violations and four citations between May 21 through May 25, the first weekend of bars and restaurants being allowed to serve customers indoors.The citations don't list many details other than the name of the establishment and the code they were cited under. And not all were for crowds. Some were for liquor violations. Most of the citations were for disorderly conduct."I know one location in the Toledo district, the bar was crowded, people everywhere," Wolf said. "The manager that was there had absolutely no control over what was going on inside."The administrative process can take months. So whether any of the establishments cited will get fined or lose their license remains unknown.View Comments
