Science Misrepresented

One again, it's more like science misunderstood, instead of misrepresented (to be charitable.) 1) ) The Paris accord is simply a bandaid offered to deal with a burst aorta. 2) a CO2 molecule produced by the burning of fossil fuels remains (detrimentally) in the atmosphere on average 500 years. So our actions now have effects that persist for many generations to follow. 3) a great deal of CO2 is made during all aspects of the manufacture of the merchandise that Amazon drop ships. This includes packaging. This appears not to have been addressed in the Bezos plan 4) a great deal of CO2 will be made during all aspects of the electric vans. They may "run on renewable energy" but, as #2, above, their manufacture will produce CO2. 5) same as #3,4 for all the "vast infrastructure" Bezos mentions. This is not a climate plan but a fraudlent feel-good ploy. Climate crisis can ONLY be averted by DRASTICALLY decreasng consumption. Bezos and Amazon run absolutely contrary to that imperative. PS: DO NOT fall for the Amazon "Ring" atrocity.

From the headline on down, this story overstates Amazon's ability, intent and plans to “meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement 10 years early.” Nobody should be unhappy with the shift to electric vehicles and the goal of becoming substantially independent of non-renewable energy. And while the devil's in the details, I cautiously endorse the idea of Amazon lobbying government for stronger actions. The problem is with the “tragedy of the commons” effect that the article mentions: if Amazon itself goes CO2-neutral, but its supplier and customers keep choosing CO2-heavy products, our goose is still cooked. Worse, if Amazon just avoids CO2-heavy business, and others take it up, Amazon's hands are “clean” but as a planet we're just as bad off. Or even worse, as we push activity to places with less efficient, clean processes. Dealing with the #GlobalCO2Crisis means a global solution, with all nations agreeing on both targets and enforcement when individuals such as Trump back out. The article might have adopted Neil Armstrong's modesty and said, “that's one small step for man…” about Mr. Bezos's declaration. That'd remind us of how important, but yet tiny, the Amazon effort is.

This article does well to outline Bezos' "Climate Pledge" and what Amazon hopes to accomplish and on what timeline. Author Annie Palmer doesn't really hold Bezos' feet to the fire, but she also doesn't pretend that this is an end-all solution. I hope to see follow-up stories tracking the company's progress and actions.
