NEW!458sharesCLEVELAND, Ohio — Coronavirus cases in suburban Cuyahoga County increased by 484 this week, marking the “largest increase in cases since this all started,” Board of Health Medical Director Dr. Heidi Gullett said Friday.Suburban cases now total 3,063.Much of that trend is likely tied to higher testing capability, compared to earlier spikes in March and April when testing was more limited, Gullett said.But Gullett also noted there were “substantially more” cases this week, despite recent testing capability remaining somewhat steady. Between 13,000 and 16,000 tests were administered at Cuyahoga County hospitals in each of the past three weeks.Said Gullett: “I do think [the increase] is a reflection of more people venturing out of their homes more and being interactive more.”Some of the increases are also related to non-essential work places reopening, Gullett said. To date, the board has predominantly investigated coronavirus clusters at congregate living facilities, but clusters are now being identified at an increasing number of businesses, Gullett said.Coronavirus hotspots within Cuyahoga County remained relatively unchanged since last week, according to the latest ZIP code map released Friday by the board.ZIP codes with the highest cumulative case counts, with 129 to 196 each, continue to be the eastern suburbs, Parma area, and portions of the city of Cleveland. Areas with the fewest cases continue to be the outlying suburbs near the county’s borders.There have been 186 deaths among suburban residents. The board this week recorded its youngest death yet: a 36-year-old, according to board data.Of suburban infections: 57% are female and 43% are male. About 40% are black, 47% are white and 2% are Asian. About 2.5% identify as Hispanic, though race and ethnicity data is not available for all cases.About 21% of cases are health-care workers, and 43% of infected people had pre-existing conditions that made them more susceptible to the virus. Occupational and medical history data is not available for all cases.The ability of Cuyahoga County hospitals to treat coronavirus patients fluctuated somewhat this week. Seventy-four percent of ICU beds were occupied, a decrease of three percentage points from last week, when critical care capacity hit its highest levels yet since the local outbreak began.Occupancy of regular hospital beds increased by 3 percentage points since last week, to 73%.
