Tim Walz signed an executive order Thursday, activating the Minnesota National Guard as Minneapolis, St. Paul and Oakdale have been beset by protests in the wake of the death of George Floyd in police custody.The National Guard announced Thursday night that more than 500 soldiers have been activated to St. Paul, Minneapolis and surrounding communities.“Our mission is to protect life, preserve property and the right to peacefully demonstrate,” the National Guard said in a tweet. “A key objective is to ensure fire departments are able to respond to calls.”Looting has erupted at various locations in St. Paul and Minneapolis.“Local leaders have requested National Guard resources after extensive damage to private property occurred and peaceful protests evolved into a dangerous situation for protesters and first responders,” Walz’s office said in a statement Thursday.The National Guard will work with local government agencies to provide personnel, equipment and facilities.“It is time to rebuild,” Walz said in a statement. “Rebuild the city, rebuild our justice system, and rebuild the relationship between law enforcement and those they’re charged to protect. George Floyd’s death should lead to justice and systemic change, not more death and destruction. As George Floyd’s family has said, ‘Floyd would not want people to get hurt.
