Did you design the clothing yourself?I design the clothing myself, but I always do so in conjunction with our production teams. One of the first things I did was to tour Portugal and Italy looking for the right people to produce our clothing. Our craftsmen in Serra da Estrela, three hours from Lisbon, have been making beautiful clothing since 1964 and I toured Portugal for a month in late 2013 before finding them. We then sourced another wonderful team 15 minutes from our flat in Lisbon and then also in Parma in Italy. As I didn’t study at fashion college, I wanted to combine my artistic vision with the best technical expertise that I could find.You've gone from a £6,000 loan to a £3 million turnover. How do you explain that success?Debs and I have worked very hard to spread the word about the Tom Cridland brand, especially when it comes to marketing. We actually toured the US for six weeks this year doing TV interviews! Debs and I rented a four-wheel-drive and drove from Boston to LA, stopping at 20 cities en route to promote sustainable fashion and our clothing. We also get a lot of repeat business and our customers often recommend our clothing to their family and friends.What is it about your products that appeals to people?We actually just did a customer survey on this so, in order, Tom Cridland clothing appeals to buyers because of its quality, the range of colours, our sustainable ethos and the entrepreneurial story behind the creation of the brand.How have you managed to get so many celebrity endorsements for your clothing?Through being proactive in contacting the management of musicians and actors whose work we love, we’ve had the honour of making clothing for Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Stiller, Rod Stewart, Hugh Grant, Danny McBride, Frankie Valli, Stephan Merchant, Jeremy Piven, Nigel Olsson, Brandon Flowers, Robbie Williams, Daniel Craig, Clint Eastwood and Kendrick Lamar. Everyone loves gifting “influencers” or people with big social media followings. We just wanted to make clothing for artists whose talent we respect. Our favourite customer is our friend, Nigel Olsson, who has been Elton John’s drummer since 1969. He is a true gentleman with a kind heart and a very sharp dresser. He’s been a huge help to us getting our brand off the ground.
