Robin Lees, a retired Chemistry teacher from County Durham, said thought he had spotted Mr Cummings near his home. He told BBC Radio Newcastle: "Just by what he looks like in the press, I had obviously seen him. "You know, I take an interest in the news, I look at the BBC website every day, that sort of thing. "I take an interesting in politics, also, so I know what he looks like, and this person did look strikingly like him. He had a wife and child with him, so."Asked what he thought about seeing him 250 miles from London, he said: "I thought it was slightly strange. "That's why I just went home and looked up online and realised, you know. I wouldn't have known what the family looked like. "I found out he had a son the sort of age the child seemed to be. So I thought, that must be him." He added: "And I remembered the numberplate, because it was easy to remember, and just wrote it down. "I looked it up and found out it wasn't from County Durham, I thought somebody might have bought it second hand."When the news broke, Mr Lees said, he thought "Well, goodness me, that must be the person I saw, then. "And then there were these stories in the press saying that he'd been there, and other people denying it and saying he was just stuck in his house all the time. "So I just looked up online to see the history and saw that those days fitted with the time he was supposed to be in County Durham." He contacted the Guardian newspaper to confirm the numberplate he had written down matched Mr Cummings' numberplate - which it did. He added: "I didn't do very much else, and loads of people sort of appeared at my door and I just told them the same story, that's all."Read moreCoronavirus outbreakMr Lees said he was not interested in publicity.
