“It was so nice to have a kid in the library again.”
From the moment this movie dropped its first trailer, I could tell it was going to be an absolute blast and I’m so happy to say that I was right.
The casting for this is superb! Front and centre we have Karen Gillan as Sam, an assassin who has to go against orders so she can protect 8-year-old Emily (Chloe Coleman). Along the way she gets help from her mother, Scarlet (Lena Headey), and three other assassins: Florence (Michelle Yeoh), Madeleine (Carla Gugino), and Anna May (Angela Bassett). All of these women are incredible and are so good to watch. The characters are fun and interesting in their own but there’s also great chemistry throughout the whole group, no matter who is sharing a scene.
The plot itself is simple but entertaining. The pacing could have been a little better perhaps. I remember being maybe 10/15 minutes from the end and wondering how it was all going to wrap up in time. I will say, it does manage to do so but overall, the movie could have been a bit tighter. That, however, is my main criticism and it was nowhere near enough to spoil this for me because in the end, as I said before, I had an absolute blast.
Due to the nature of the plot, there are a lot of action sequences, all of which are done so well and are delightful to watch. There’s one in particular in which Sam (Karen Gillan) has to tape weapons to her hands (for reasons I won’t mention because of spoilers) and what follows is an action sequence which is equal parts cool and hilarious. Something that isn’t entirely unique to that one scene. As a whole, this movie takes itself seriously enough to result in a movie that is fairly consistent and does what it sets out to do but at the same time, it doesn’t take itself so seriously that no fun is had.
At the end of the day, is Gunpowder Milkshake perfect? No. It most certainly has its flaws but it does what it says on the tin and then some. As I said, it’s got an impressive cast and fantastic action sequences and on top of all that, the movie looks wonderful with good cinematography and a beautifully bright colour palette. It’s definitely a movie worth checking out and I, for one, am excited to see whatever the sequel might bring.
