“This place is haunted!”
2023’s Haunted Mansion may be the second adaption of the Disney theme park ride of the same name but it is its own movie and bears no connection to 2003’s The Haunted Mansion other than the fact they’re both inspired by the same thing. This means that you don’t have to be familiar with the original to watch this new story.
Right off the bat, I have to mention how good the cast of Haunted Mansion is. Some steal the show more than others but they were all so good to watch. Each plays a different role within the story, all contributing something unique, and because there’s such variety amongst the characters, they’re never boring to watch. I certainly had my favourites but at no point was I disappointed when the focus shifted to any specific character.
Unfortunately, while the acting and the dynamics between characters may have been good, the plot felt a little thin in this version. The basic concept was interesting enough but it felt like information came in awkward bursts rather than being spread throughout the movie. In the end, it just felt a little clunky and like the bare minimum was being done.
Now, that’s not to say it wasn’t still a fun time, because it was. I was never bored per se and some moments had me laughing while others had me invested in what might happen next. Something I enjoyed about this 2023 version was that some of the camera movements and action sequences seemed to draw inspiration from the way the actual ride moves. It’s not done too much to be distracting but enough to show homage to what inspired it. The same can also be said for the voice of the villain.
The design of the ghosts is also delightful and there are differences from the 2003 version so if you have seen the original, there are wonderful new visuals to enjoy. This goes for the set design and costume and make-up and hair as well. It’s a whole new look to go with a new story and once again, a fantastic cast, so even though I may think this version isn’t as good, it’s still absolutely worth your time to check out.
