GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation has officially opened registration for its seventh annual Free Summer Day Camp program, catering to over 200 Grand Rapids youth. The camps, held at Garfield Park, Calvin Christian Reformed Church/Martin Luther King Park, and Roosevelt Park, will run from June 10 to August 16, Monday through Friday, welcoming children aged five to 14.
            
            According to David Marquardt, the City's parks and recreation director, "Our Summer Day Camp program is an important resource providing safe, fun and engaging activities for youth in our community." The planned activities at the camps include arts and crafts, outdoor adventures, sports, swimming, movement and dance, STEM, and more.
            
            Families interested in enrolling their children in the free program can sign up online. The camp at Garfield Park and Martin Luther King Park will operate from noon to 4 p.m., while the camp at Roosevelt Park will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
            
            In addition to seeking campers, the Parks and Recreation Department is also in search of camp counselors for the summer. Marquardt emphasized, "Our counselors are a major part of what makes the program possible and successful." The positions are part-time, with counselors expected to work around 25 hours per week, earning a starting wage of $16 per hour. Applicants must be 15 years or older and have at least six months of experience working with youth.
