Smash Sacramento is riding the wave of a new trend of rooms designated specifically for breaking and destroying. This is first of its kind in the Sacramento area, the next closest is in San Jose.David Messier, owner and founder, said he was inspired to create a venue to express emotion after losing a loved one back in January 2017. The business opened November 2018.Not all customers go to rage. Messier said some people come to destroy items as a first date idea or to celebrate an occasion."It's something fun. There's something new to do in Sacramento," Messier said. "We don't want you to think it's just angry people coming here."Smash operates largely by appointment, offering rooms based on group size and how much you want to destroy. The business is closed Monday through Wednesday.Weapons offered are sledgehammers, golf clubs, crowbars, baseball bats and paintball guns. People can go golfing with beer bottles, swing a bat at a printer or take the sledgehammer and leave a gaping hole in a computer monitor.Messier said he wanted to create a safe space where people can express emotion physically without judgment."They've (patrons) come here because they are experiencing something in their life that they really need to get off their chest," Messier said. "They don't want to hurt themselves or anybody else or destroy anything of their own and be able to come out and just really let loose." There are specials for booking a room, including a ladies' night. People ages 12 and up can book a smash room. Children require parental consent before going into these rooms.Paint room alternatives, where people can express themselves creatively with colors, are also available. Children as young as 2 years old can participate in those.Messier said he has plans of expanding and opening new locations in the future.
