Daniel Daly.Edward López, 19;&nbsp;Osvaldo Ríos, 22; and José Veras, 18, were charged with conspiracy to commit theft, credit card fraud and&nbsp;theft, Daly&nbsp;said. They are due to answer the charges in court on June 3.The Wayne thefts alone resulted in 60 residents&nbsp;missing their mail, according to arrest affidavits. The suspects also stole envelopes and packages from mailboxes in Fairfield, Pequannock and Wanaque, the captain&nbsp;said.Among the mail stolen from Wayne residents were two checks, totaling more than $37,300, and four new credit cards, the reports say.Thieves often alter&nbsp;stolen checks by erasing ink on them with chemicals, such as nail-polish remover&nbsp;— a scheme&nbsp;known as "washing." The estimates that its agents recover more than $1 billion worth of counterfeit checks each year.Patrolman David Fox responded to Webster Drive about&nbsp;5 a.m. on Tuesday and saw the suspects' car parked with its headlights off, near the corner of Marlton Drive, the reports show.FOR SUBSCRIBERS:SCHOOLS:ART ON DISPLAY:As the officer got out of his cruiser to&nbsp;approach&nbsp;them, they sped off&nbsp;toward Black Oak Ridge Road, the reports&nbsp;say. He chased down the car about 1½ miles away, on Pompton Plains Crossroad. As one of the suspects stepped out of the car, several pieces of mail fell to the ground. The glove compartment also was filled with stolen envelopes, the reports say.The mail was turned over to postal inspectors to be returned to residents.López and Veras were released, and&nbsp;Ríos was taken to the county jail, where he still was being held Thursday.
