MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Many of us have been excited to see our favorite restaurants get “Back to Business.”Employees are also eager to get back to work but doing so comes with new challenges.Have questions about the spread of coronavirus? FOX13’s Winnie Wright found out not everyone is comfortable with the “new normal.”We can probably all agree that masks aren’t exactly comfortable because they’re stuffy and easily fog up your glasses.But for some, wearing them hours on end as part of their job, they’re more than an annoyance.They’re now a concern.“I’m having shortness of breath,” said Darcey Keener, server. “My voice is gone. I’m dizzy, shaky, excessive sweating.”Just like so many in Memphis, Keener, a restaurant server, was out of work nearly two months as COVID-19 put the world on standby.Then, local leaders announced it was time for the city and county to get “back to business” with a multi-phase plan.“I couldn’t have been more excited,” Keener said. Unfortunately, she said, that excitement was short-lived.“Servers that work in high-volume restaurants that have multiple floors and maybe a patio outside that are working 10-hour shifts, wearing a mask and just breathing in their own carbon dioxide all day,” she said. “The health effects that I’m feeling right now; it’s not good.”Keener admits she is a smoker but said she’s healthy and used to walking the equivalent of half a marathon every shift.“I’m finding even speaking to you right now, I’m short on breath,” she said. One stipulation in restaurant reopening is that staff must wear a face covering and gloves throughout their shift.Keener said that meant wearing the thick face-covering 10 hours straight.“I feel like I have a diaper on my face,” she said. Keener said she felt no choice but to quit her job.We are not naming the restaurant, because Keener said she doesn’t blame them following the rules.She just hopes those making the rules consider their struggles as they call the shots.“I’m risking unemployment by not going back to work because I feel my health is more important,” Keener said. Keener said she worries the health of others in the foodservice industry is going to suffer and many of them will have to leave their jobs the same way she did.© 2020 Cox Media Group
