There’s no doubt that reading in a language that is not your own might feel difficult and daunting at first, but here are some tips to get you started! 
Don’t be afraid to underline and write notes of what new words and expressions mean. It’s ok to use a dictionary or a translator once in a while to help with understanding and help you to enjoy the story! A great site to use is Reverso, since it also gives you examples of the vocabulary in context. If you use the Reverso app, it will also automatically create a flashcard deck out of the words that you search, so that you can go through them and recap later! 
If you are struggling and feel frustrated because you have to search up every second word, don’t panic – you’ve probably just chosen a book which is not right for your current level. The best way to choose a book is to pick one slightly below your level as you are getting started (level B1 learners can sometimes be better off starting with an A2 level book). This helps to get used to reading and increases your confidence! 
Another good way to choose a book is to choose stories that you are familiar with already, maybe one that you have read before, or seen the movie of. This can help you to understand cues from the context and will help you with understanding and enjoying the language.
There’s more to reading than just looking at the words on a page. Since reading helps you to get to grips with context, culture, and a whole bunch of other stuff, it’s great for improving your language in general, so why not use it for improving other skills too…
By reading aloud you can train your face and mouth muscles in producing the right sounds. It can also help your brain to process the words better and get used to actually saying the language. It might feel silly at first, but it can make a big difference in how used to using certain language you are, and can help with your proficiency. 
Another thing to add to your to-do list is to listen to the audio version of the book while you are reading along. This will help you to immerse yourself in the language, listen to the correct pronunciation and get you used to hearing the language in context. Time to get those cogs whirring! 
A language journal or a vocabulary journal can be an incredible way to keep track of all the vocabulary that you know or don’t know. You can also use such a list later to make flashcards or other decks to help improve your vocabulary retention or memory. Writing down words and expressions that you didn’t know before is the first step to remembering them, but a journal can help to further this and help you to internalise new language and learn how to use it!

There are 2 ways in which you can read a book when you are reading to improve your language skills. The first way is focused reading. This means that the main goal is to learn as much as possible from what you are reading, and really focus on grammar, context and vocabulary. 
There are 3 main steps to focused reading. Usually this is done by breaking a book into chapters or paragraphs: 
Reading for gist: Have a quick read through the text. Ask yourself if you understand the context and the main point of the section. Don’t stop on words you don’t know, try to understand what the whole context of the text means. 
Going over in detail: This is where you dissect and analyse the text: Translate unknown words, take notes and look at any grammatical structures or particular expressions. Try to figure out what each sentence is trying to say and how it works. 
Re-read: Now that you have all the details, re-read the text with all of your new understanding and information. Read it carefully and make sure that you fully understand everything.
Some readers like to also go through the text a fourth time to read for speed. Read through your text quickly to see if you can get the hang of the meaning and everything in the text. Doing a bit of focused reading frequently can help with fluency, the quality of your vocabulary and retention and grammatical understanding! 
Relaxed reading on the other hand, is just about reading through your book for fun and jotting words down as you come across them in a really relaxed, non-studious kind of way!
