MADISON HEIGHTS (WXYZ) — When life handed 24-year-old Lauren Wesson a lemon several years ago, she decided to turn that sour time in her life into something sweet.“I was let go and I still had a ton of bills,” said Wesson. “I was about 21 . . . looking at what I could do outside of having a job.”But little did Wesson know that her side job of baking custom cakes and desserts would turn into a bustling business. She posted one of her custom cakes to Instagram and the post took off. That’s when she knew.“I just started getting so many customers,” said Wesson. “I just felt like this is it.”
Once the pandemic hit, Wesson said she noticed a dip in business, people canceling orders — but then, she said, things picked up again around Mother’s Day when she received more than 60 orders.“There was so many people coming to my home,” she said. So, she said she made the decision to open her own bakery called Sweetalicious Sweets in Madison Heights.
“I was a little scared because of the pandemic, but it’s been going pretty well,” she said.While her specialty is custom cakes, Wesson also offers a variety of desserts, including cheesecake cups, banana pudding-stuffed waffle cones, cupcakes, and cheesecake stuffed strawberries.
