Many strange things have occurred on Lake Superior. There have been roughly 10,000 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes but only 350 happened in Lake Superior.
Lake Superior is known as the "Graveyard of the Great Lakes." Superior is in the top 10 haunted lakes in the world. For as long as there have been ships cruising the lake there have been stories of haunted places, lonely lightkeepers, chilling tales, and ghost ships. The photo of a freighter on Lake Superior is real. I pulled it from a video on the Lake Superior Photo Facebook page. To see this freighter moving in real-time is a bizarre sight.
It looks like an island is floating in the picture above. These occurrences are called "Fata Morgana (mirage)" or "Superior Mirage". This phenomenon happens when light is reflected or bent as it passes through layers of air. It happens this time of year on Lake Superior when the warm air is above the cold water.
Fata Morgana mirages can also happen on land, lake, or sea. It can occur in polar regions and the desert.
The video that was captured on Lake Superior was extra special because normally you get the mirage of the inverted boat or the image can be stacked on top of each other. The image above shows both. If you want to see the video I grabbed this photo from click here.
