The new campaign being launched across the state aims to normalize seeking help, a path that’s often stigmatized seen in conflict with the mantra that men should “cowboy up” away their problems.“It’s from young adult honestly to last breath,” Fremont County Prevention Specialist Tauna Groomsmith said of the age ranges of Wyoming men who die by suicide. She turned to a group gathered for a meeting of the Fremont County Association of Governments (FCAG), primarily men, and asked: “Do you like to talk about suicide?” The question was followed by head shakes and one resounding “nope.”“See?” Groomsmith said. “We want to try to reach males in a way that resonates with them … I would encourage every man here to get on mantherapy.com and just take a look,” she stated, pointing to the online therapy program targeted to men that’s being promoted across Wyoming. “It’s kind of cool if there’s somebody that you can reach out to.”Groomsmith is helping to promote mantherapy.com in Fremont County through a Community Prevention Grant, and when the new grant cycle begins in July, buses around the county will begin sporting ads that use that light-hearted messaging in an attempt to get men and boys to take a look at the program.The website utilizes humor and tools to help males learn about mental health, conduct an “18-point head inspection,” and connect with resources that can help. And according to a four-year study funded by the CDC, Man Therapy works – it reduces depression, suicide risk, and bad mental health days, and boosts help-seeking behavior for working-age men.“What really sold me on this is that I’ve been working with a couple of gentlemen aged 18 to 69, and I asked them to take a look at Man Therapy,” explained Groomsmith. “All of them said, ‘If I had had this I wouldn’t be where I’m at today.’”The site helps men explore topics from depression and anxiety to sleep, relationships, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts.
