The smell of coffee beans wafts through the room inside Hurricane Coffee Company in Goose Creek.Perimeter shelves feature merchandise from local artisans, board games, and books.The walls are adorned with signs carrying positive phrases that uplift.Seating areas range from a full-blown dining room table that seats twelve, to comfy old sofas with worn pillows and stories of their own to tell.READ MORE: "Tracy Rogers trains service dogs to transform lives: March 2024 Jefferson Award Winner."What’s not readily seen by new customers who walk through the door is the story behind the eclectic space.To owner, Mistina Chambers, the work is more than serving up a cup of coffee hot or iced.It’s about making a “connection.”For Mistina, family conversations were fueled by a love for coffee.READ MORE: "Dr. Khan's journey to start a free clinic fueled by faith: February Jefferson Award winner."“We would sit down, and we would have coffee and work through things,” she said.This was her wish for Hurricane Coffee Company.Initially, her vision was for her coffee business to be a drive-thru model.When that fell through, she was presented with the opportunity to have a larger brick-and-mortar location.READ MORE: "January Jefferson Award winner: Second Chance Resource Center."Mistina called this a "divine intervention."Fleeting interactions with customers were not meant to be. “This space is supposed to be a safe space,” she said. “It's supposed to be somewhere you can go – that you are comfortable in – that you feel at home in.”For customers who are going through small things in life to something as serious as sex trafficking, Mistina wants them to know that she and her small staff will lend a listening ear.“They can always come out and tell us," she said. “We’ve also got it up on our board that they can just  give us a look or a wink and we can make calls on their behalf.”That assistance includes calls to dispatch emergency resources like shelter and restraining orders.There’s also a food pantry and community closet primarily for the unhoused community.There is no judgment and there are no questions asked.With only five months of being in business, the support from the community has been overwhelming.Hurricane Coffee Company is a regular meet-up spot for organizations and groups.“We've got some members from the task force. We've got people from the VA. We've got people from the local community and therapists, the doctors,” Mistina said enthusiastically.And it’s comforting for her to see students from a nearby high school stop through in the mornings before heading off to their classes.“It is exciting to bring everybody in and to see how it’s grown,” she said.Mistina calls it a "good feeling" in the middle of a world she sees as a “very ugly place.”“I'm raising babies in this world, and they need to know that there is  light in the dark – that there is good.”
