PLEASANT HILL, Iowa — A Pleasant Hill woman knows all to well the devastation a tornado can inflict.“People says it sounds like a freight train,” Jody Bowers said. “It really does sound like a freight train.”It’s hard to forget what happened to her neighborhood just outside Pleasant Hill on March 5, 2022.“We had some people with some really devastating losses around here.”On Friday she took shelter in her basement as a tornado touched down just west of her home in Pleasant Hill.“And it got a little too close for comfort for me, at least got a little too close for comfort,” she said. “I did have a friend in Pleasant Hill whose house was impacted and I let her know anything you need let us know because I know what it was like for people to offer help for me.”Jody admits help was something she and her husband initially didn’t want, but it made all the difference in the world.“Just let people help you and if they offer to come and help you, let them come and help you,” she said.But that same advice comes with a warning, especially when the ‘helper’ claims to be a contractor or cleanup specialist assuring you insurance will cover the cost.“Be very, very careful of the contractor you hire,” Jody advised. “Make sure you’ve checked them out, get references. Make sure they’re bonded and insured.”And even though the days may seem long, finding ways to solve problems you’d never imagined, Jody says there is light at the end of the tunnel, and the proof can be seen all around her.“There are definitely better days ahead, I didn’t like it because the next day it snowed six inches and it had been eighty degrees the day before so that was a little jarring for me, but I think the mess and the cleanup part was so daunting to me and I thought it would never end, but it really does end and things get better and you go back to living your daily life,” she said.If you have been impacted by a weather disaster, insurance experts advise clients to contact their insurance agent immediately. Avoid out of state contractors who show up asking for your business and always question anyone who demands money upfront before any repairs or work is done. Stay in contact with your agent and ask for guidance as you work to replace and rebuild.
