                                This column by Mona Weatherly originally appeared in the May 2, 2024 issue of the Custer County Chief.It was sad news for me, the passing of J.L Schmidt, who wrote “The Capitol View.” I’ve been at the Chief since 2015. We included his columns when we could. Sometimes space is at a premium and we sacrifice state-based or national-based columns for local news and photos.I appreciated J.L.’s wit, his turn of phrase and his ability to call most any body on the carpet. Even when I didn’t agree with him, I appreciated him as a word-smith. This week, we print his final column which is on term limits.I can’t help but think, in many ways we’re all “term limited.” People change jobs, move and retire. The most final term limit of all awaits us - death. Somber thoughts. I hope that when the final term limit comes round to me, I will be remembered fondly by some and appreciated for my work here at the Chief by many. I will remember J.L. and how reading his columns helped me become more forthcoming in my own column writing, even to me being able to call out someone or something a time or two.The Nebraska Press Association is looking for a replacement statehouse correspondent. When a decision is made, we’ll share it with you and hopefully, be able to resume thought-provoking and sometimes entertaining statehouse columns. Until then, though, you’re stuck with the staff here at the Custer County Chief. I may be a bit full of myself, but I think you’re in good hands.During one NPA session, the presenter listed what surveyed readers want. Opinion columns weren’t high on the list; they were about halfway down. That surprised me. I usually enjoy them and imagine my feelings when I realized that not every one thinks the same thing! Ha!Once the paper goes to press this week, Kelli, Donnis and I will sit down and review the sessions we attended, the information we gathered and see what we can implement to make the Chief even better for our readers. If you’d like to add your opinion on the wanting or not wanting opinion columns or anything else, let me know at chiefnews@custercountychief.com.I consider myself fortunate that I’ve had a lot of opportunities for good travel and great experiences. I can add this weekend’s NPA convention to the list. It was a pleasure meeting Rebekah Allick and Josiah Allick. One might think leading Husker athletes to be distant and proud. These two were anything but that. They were approachable, friendly, gracious and kind. When asked to help display items for auction, Josiah twirled autographed basketballs on his finger tip and Rebekah walked about the room, tossing the autographed volleyball from hand to hand. Prices for those items flew out of my budget quickly so I opted for the least inexpensive option - a photo op! I heard they said they were surprised and humbled on the prices that their autographed balls and photos sold for during the live auction.I congratulate Donnis and Kelli on their First Places at NPA. I remain in pursuit of the elusive First in Editorial Column. I’m glad for the comments on my editorial columns and sports columns. It’s a privilege to be able to take ideas and opinions and distribute them via a printed soap box. Things might cool down editorially for me, at least for a little while, now that the legislature is out of session. But wait, there’s talk of a special session and then there’s the general election in November …I am really proud of what we do here at the Chief.&nbsp; I thank those of you who appreciate it.
