Cornyn treat service as just another word for politics as usual, one partisan press release or Capitol Hill meeting at a time,” he said. “But (Hegar) and I have both served our country in uniform, and she knows that there’s a different spirit of public service that we need much more of in Washington.”Democratic voters will choose between Hegar, a decorated Air Force helicopter pilot from Round Rock, and state Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas, in the July 14 runoff. The winner will face Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican running for a fourth term.Buttigieg, a former mayor of South Bend, Ind., dropped out of the presidential race shortly before the Texas primary and endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden, now the presumptive Democratic nomineee.Buttigieg’s endorsement in the Texas Senate race is a high-profile boost for Hegar, who led the 12-way Democratic primary in March.However, no one candidate received more than 50% of the primary vote, and Hegar and West now must face off in the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic.Gov. Greg Abbott moved the runoff election from May 26 to July 14 as the state saw a rising number of coronavirus cases and deaths.Both candidates have moved their campaign operations to virtual events and have continued to raise money from donors.In the first three months of 2020, Hegar raised $1.6 million, with $1.1 million cash on hand. West raised $228,400 and had $121,000 in cash on hand.Cornyn raised $2.7 million over the same period and reported nearly $13 million in his campaign coffers.View Comments
