The demonstration, called "Walk the Iron" began at 101 N Wilmington St.Benjamin Teeter, one of the armed demonstrators Saturday, said they were "not affiliated with any group."Raleigh Police said that the armed demonstrators had to put firearms down if they were going to protest in downtown Raleigh."Firearms and the protest cannot be associated together," one of the Raleigh police officers told Teeter."You could be subjected to arrest if you continue," the officer told the group with guns.The armed people continued to walk through downtown because they said they were "just walking" and not holding a protest. No arrests were made, according to officials.People drove around downtown to counter the protest with signs that read, "Walk the Iron Home" and "Raleigh will not be intimidated."While these demonstrators marched through Raleigh, Mom's Demand Action, a nonprofit movement against gun violence, held a virtual protest over Twitter. Members posted online while collectively gathering over the video chat platform, Zoom.The Twitter protest was to remind lawmakers to "stand up for gun safety now, or start looking for a new job come November," according to a press release.The Raleigh Police Department said they are investigating the groups protesting."While State law does not permit individuals to possess a dangerous weapon when they are participating in or spectating at a protest, there is nothing that prohibits an individual, or a group of individuals, from walking on a city sidewalk while carrying and displaying firearms."North Carolina is an open carry state, meaning people can carry weapons openly on public property, but neighbors and business owners told WRAL News these demonstrators are going too far and are violating the law.2Tags:Web EditorCopyright 2022 by Capitol Broadcasting Company.
