BlueScope Steel hit by cyber attack causing worldwide system shutdown of operationsShareBlueScope Steel has been the subject of a cyber attack, forcing production systems to be halted company-wide.The ransomware infection was discovered yesterday morning in one of the company's United States-based businesses.BlueScope's chief financial officer Tania Archibald said the company had reverted to manual operations where possible, but some processes such as steel despatches were continuing as normal."We are taking this attack extremely seriously," Ms Archibald said. "Our people are working diligently to protect and restore our systems."BlueScope's corporate affairs manager Michael Raey said steelmaking at Port Kembla was continuing, however the hot strip mill was temporarily disrupted."It is likely to be back up and running later today," he said.Cyber security expert for CyberCX, Alastair MacGibbon, said phishing emails were likely to be the cause of such an attack, and they were becoming more common.He said often criminals would attack computers to get a ransom out of companies or to shut down their operations. "What we're doing [when working from home] is taking computers outside the work environment and connecting via VPNs and home routers."We are more vulnerable."We see criminals attacking some remote access software to take over computers," he said.BlueScope has not confirmed whether or not the attack was caused by employees opening phishing emails.Several other high-profile companies and organisations have been targeted by such attacks in the past fortnight.Logistics company Toll was hit by its second ransomware attack this year.The company confirmed on its website it had been targeted by hackers using ransomware known as Nefilim.It refused to pay the ransom that was demanded by hackers.Toll confirmed in a statement there had been some data theft."At this stage, we have determined that the attacker has downloaded some data stored on the corporate server, and we are in the process of identifying the specific nature of that information," a spokesperson said."The attacker is known to publish stolen data to the dark web."Service NSW was also hacked last month, in an attack that compromised 47 staff email accounts.NSW Police Minister David Elliot said as a result, police would be increasing the number of officers in its cyber crime unit from 10 to 18.Meanwhile, Labor has called for a parliamentary inquiry into cyber security in NSW.Labor's spokeswoman for better public services, Sophie Cotsis, said Service NSW had access to some extremely sensitive data, with more than 700,000 people visiting the Service NSW website each week."Labor will push for a formal Upper House inquiry to expose the real cyber security risks NSW faces," Mrs Cotsis said.BlueScope said it would provide further information on breaches of its cyber security in due course.15 May 202015 May 2020Fri 15 May 2020 at 1:41am, 15 May 202015 May 2020Fri 15 May 2020 at 5:56amMore on:
