They’re hesitant, but the important thing for us is to build trust with them.”On Wednesday, a letter written by Cupich was posted to the diocese’s website and Facebook pages outlining the diocese’s plan, which includes the governor’s input, and was a collaborative effort among clergy, healthcare professionals and civic leaders.by on ScribdAccording to Cupich’s plan, each parish will be required to have a “certification of readiness” to reopen, which includes a plan of action and proof of trained volunteers. The diocese will begin training volunteers via webinar beginning next week.“The training will involve helping people understand a whole new culture of hospitality by which their going to be told how to receive people in the church, keep social distancing, but also to take care of the cleansing and sanitizing of the church afterwards,” Cupich said.Phase I of reopening starts as early at May 23, which is next Saturday.It will allow parishes to hold baptisms,&nbsp;reconciliation, weddings and funerals. These celebrations and faith practices will be limited to 10 attendees.Phase IA, which starts May 30, &nbsp;allows for parishes to host private prayer and adoration, with no more than 10 at a time inside.Phase II of the plan will mean the reopening of parishes for weekday and weekend masses for larger groups, but that depends on the capacity of the church and guidelines set by the state.Attendance may require a ticketing or reservation system which has yet to be worked out. No date has been given for Phase II.“Maybe there’s some value in knowing who’s coming to church, so if someone contracts the disease, this illness, we then can alert people who were there at that same service and track it,” Cupich said.Additionally, Cupich said communion will be given but using social distancing, and no shared cup.“It’ll be an adjustment for Catholics when they get back into the church. Things will be different,” Cupich said. “We’re talking about a whole cultural change here. This is something we have to do if we’re going to make people’s safety the priority.”Dioceses in Joliet and Rockford are also implementing the same plans in their parishes to begin the reopening.since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, 1,677 new cases of COVID-19 and 192 new deaths were identified across Illinois, bringing the statewide totals up to 84,698 cases and 3,792 deaths.Also Wednesday, a federal judge blocked an effort by two Chicago area churches who want clearance to hold service following social distancing guidelines. And the governor had sharp words for Dr. Willie Wilson who said he supports the decision of 100 churches to hold services on Sunday.
