Instead, they realized their food production staff could be put to work to continue serving food to the community."Right now we don’t have much financial reserves to be giving back," said Michael Cyr, director of marketing for The Skinny Pancake. "We’ve been able to use our resources - both our team and our kitchen - in a productive and helpful way."They started their ShiftMeals program to provide meals to people out of work because of the pandemic, offering a wide variety of food options twice a week. The program caught the attention of the Vermont Foodbank, which is under a lot of pressure as its seeing 40-100% increases of people at its food shelves and distribution sites."Initially, the plan was just to supplement the existing charitable food system at food shelves and the work the Vermont Foodbank was doing," Cyr said. "Ultimately, we found out there was an opportunity for a partnership."The food bank is buying 20,000 meals from The Skinny Pancake over the course of the next month or two. "This way, The Skinny Pancake continues to bring employees back to work, which is what we all want," said Vermont Foodbank CEO John Sayles, "and continues to use its local supply chains."Both organizations have a focus of supporting and buying from local producers, to ensure fresh and nutritious meals reach Vermonters. Sayles said the partnership with The Skinny Pancake is a win-win, happy to support the business during a time when everyone is struggling."If it wasn’t for shift meals, we would not be able to employ the staff that we have," Cyr said. "We’re getting paid $6 a meal, which almost like a nonprofit.
