They arrived to find torn packages and an open safe. However, deputies soon learned from the United States Postal Inspection Service that something else had been taken. “They notified us that mail hold slips were taken during the theft,” said Kevin McCarty of the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office. “These were the pieces of paper that the mailman would use to remind them of which houses had mail, who was out of town, on vacation, at a winter home somewhere. That means they don’t want their mail sent there because they’re not home.” Court records show that shortly thereafter, four homes matching that letter number were burglarized. The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office said there was another attempted theft but the couple made it home in time. “This is something I have literally never encountered in my nearly 10 years of investigating mail-related crimes and mail-related violations, including post office thefts. “This is a first for me.” After reviewing video surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses, investigators finally connected the burglaries to Tina Woods. She was arrested Wednesday at her home, hiding in an empty closet. In court, prosecutors said Woods faces 24 additional felony charges. Woods is also a suspect in an investigation in Jefferson County involving multiple burglaries, including of a post office. Woods’ husband, Paul, was also charged with theft. The judge set bail at $25,000 after prosecutors warned of the potential danger if Woods was not detained. “It is staggering, the level of recent criminal activity across multiple jurisdictions,” said Deputy District Attorney Robert Appleyard. “Residential burglaries can easily lead to violence, so I believe there is also concern about community safety.” Because the post office is considered a federal building, the Woods couple could also face federal charges.
