THE new Ford Capri has been spotted for the first time doing a test drive decades after it was withdrawn from production.The popular classic model is making a comeback next year, but has undergone some radical changes.The Sun’s Rob Gill exclusively revealed back in March that the motor giant would be reviving the Capri from 2024.However, a major redesign slaps the nameplate on an engine that’s almost unrecognizable to even the most avid Ford nerd.The popular gas-guzzling coupe, dubbed the “worker’s Porsche” at the time, has been reborn as an all-electric crossover SUV.Now a prototype of the new engine, said to cost around £40,000, has been spotted near the Ford factory in Cologne as testers take it for a test drive almost 40 years after the last engine rolled off the production line in 1986.The snapshots published by Autocarshow the car in a test livery, with the rear seat windows covered and a gray film to hide any hint of its real color.However, the silhouette is obviously very different from the old Capri, as this version looks more like some of its EV 4×4 competitors like the Audi E-Tron or the Skoda Enyaq.The stocky Porsche 911-style rear end and long, sweeping hood are gone, replaced by a much larger body that favors straight lines over curves.This appears to be very intentional on Ford’s part, with European division chief designer Amko Leenarts saying: “Retro designs don’t move us forward.”“It’s always about completely new interpretations: that’s what makes it interesting.”Of the design process, he added: “What really hurt me was [customers] said we were boring.“We need to make unique proposals: car designs that are clearly differentiated and offer a unique perspective that no one else has.”To that end, he stressed the importance of making new electric vehicles not look like “devices” and keeping them “sexy.”Despite its retro design, the old Capri certainly won many admirers.Examples of this were superstar singer Harry Styles and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.One even appeared in Only Fools and Horses as one of Derek “Del Boy” Trotter’s many engines on the hit series.This exact car was actually sold in 2013, with a guide price of £28,000.It came after a Wheeler Dealers host offered a £5,000 reward during a desperate hunt for his stolen Ford.Meanwhile, a businessman who used his ill-gotten gains from a wage scam to build a collection of 240 classic cars lost everything after his crimes were exposed.
