The event was sponsored by State Farm and Agents Brian Ginn and Lori Hearn presented the awards respectively. Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee was also present as he expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the fire department in general as well as to the recipients of each award.“Thank you for the job that you do,” said Mayor Magee. “Thank you, State Farm for sponsoring this for the fire department. We appreciate you and you do a great job. Thank you to the recipients of the awards today chosen by their peers. I’m glad to be here among you.”Fire Chief Leo Brown shared more about this particular award program.“This is a program I started back three years ago. They discontinued it in 2007. I always said it’s something we should have kept doing because it gave the guys a reward of their own, to look out for their own. So, I said if I ever get in a position to start it back I would, and with the Mayor’s help, he elected me chief, we started it back in ’21. I mentioned it to Agent Brian Ginn, and he said, ‘We’ll do whatever we can do to come on board and support it,’ and it’s been a wonderful partnership since then. The guys love and look forward to this time of year to reward their own person. It’s rewarding.”Chief Brown also explained more about the process of choosing a recipient for each award and what made this year different.“The guys get a chance to vote. Everybody votes. Firefighters voted for the officer of the year, and the officers voted for the firefighter of the year. Last year we did it where the firefighters voted for the firefighters and the officers voted for the officers, but I tried to put a little twist to it this year because as a firefighter, you want to aspire to be an officer, so you vote for who you want the officer to be, and the officer he looks at where he came from and says, ‘This guy is on the right path to get to where I’m at.’ That’s why I switched it up this year to vote the opposite.”“I can’t thank you enough for what you do,” stated State Farm Agent Brian Ginn as he presented the Firefighter of the Year award. “What you guys do on the fire side aligns with what I try to do and help protect people every day through proper insurance coverages and I just want to thank y’all for being my agency. My favorite thing about this is it's peer-voted and I think that’s awesome. I think that says a lot about what goes into this.”“It means a lot to me,” stated Firefighter of the Year recipient, Josh Hatten, regarding what it meant to receive the honor. “It means a lot that my officers and my brothers would think I deserve this, so if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have it. I just thank my brothers for giving me this opportunity. They know me well. They know I give my all every day at work. I appreciate them and it means a lot to me.”&nbsp;Hatten has been a firefighter for ten years and was originally inspired to become a firefighter by one of his friends.“We truly appreciate you taking care of us, our customers, everyone here in Laurel, always on the job. Thank you,” stated State Farm Agent Lori Hearn as she presented the Fire Officer of the Year Award.“It’s a great honor, I appreciate it,” said Fire Officer of the Year recipient Lieutenant Kacey Morgan regarding what this award meant to him. “My guys recognize the hard work that we do every day. It’s great. I’m overwhelmed.”Lt. Morgan has served since 2008 and has been a lieutenant for four years. When asked what his favorite part of his job was, his response was, “Service. Being able to help people, to serve, to prepare my men, to prepare myself, first and foremost, it’s just all around a good gig. I love it.
