An e-cigarette tax is being considered as part of underhanded plans to get people to quit – while single-use products could be banned.Proposals for a new tax on e-cigarettes were buried in the fine print of today’s King’s Speech.Ministers announced the consultation as part of a crackdown on smoking to eventually eliminate smoking.They promised to “take action to make e-cigarettes affordable, including considering a new tax on e-cigarettes, as other countries have already done.”However, they suggested that any tax would still be lower than on cigarettes by “ensuring that there is a significant difference between the tax on e-cigarettes and tobacco products.”It will spark fresh fears that Rishi Sunak will launch a government-backed campaign to stop Brits from vaping.While the government actually wants to promote vaping to help smokers quit, it is generally tightening the laws.The consultation will discuss measures to “restrict the sale and supply of single-use vaporizers, including consideration of banning their sale.”The tough new anti-smoking measures would see the smoking age raised by one year each year, eventually making it illegal for everyone to buy cigarettes.The ban is subject to a “free vote” in Parliament, meaning MPs will not be told how to vote by party enforcers.But Labor has reiterated its intention to vote with the government so the new law will pass through Parliament.The plan was initially rejected by ministers when it was previously proposed.But Mr Sunak has now said: “People start smoking at a young age. Four out of five smokers started smoking when they were 20 years old. Later, the vast majority try to stop.”“But many fail because they are addicted and wish they had never picked up the habit in the first place.”
