YouTube’s latest AI experiments include a new chatbot designed to give you more information about a video you’re watching. The Conversational AI toolas Google’s support post mentions it, aims to answer your questions about a video and can also recommend related content. It can also quiz you on a topic as you watch an educational video. When available, it can be accessed by clicking the “Ask” button below the video. The video platform announced back in July that it was experimenting with AI to automatically create summaries of videos. Example comment topics are shown under a MrBeast video (where Google says comments were “simulated for illustrative purposes”) include “People love Bryan the bird,” “Lazarbeam should be in more videos,” and the slightly more confusing topic of “Not a submarine.” The topic feature is also running as an experiment and will be featured in “a small number of videos in English with large comment sections.” When available, the feature will be accessed via a new Topics button that will appear alongside the existing options to sort comments by Top or Most Recent. YouTube’s blog post highlights the benefits of this feature for creators, who it says can “use these comment summaries to more quickly enter comment discussions on their videos or get inspiration for new content based on their audience.” With both AI tools, YouTube warns that we “may not always get everything right” with the experiments. When it comes to YouTube comments in particular, the video platform needs to be on guard if it wants to prevent its generative AI from regurgitating the worst of a heated comments section.
