A HOMEWARE collection inspired by the late cancer activist Dame Deborah James goes on sale today.The range consists of candles, diffusers and prints featuring the Sun author’s inspiring life lessons and will raise money for her Bowelbabe Fund.In the weeks before her death last June, Dame Debs captured the hearts of the nation with her honesty, strength and message of “rebellious hope”.And now Deborah’s spirit can be brought into people’s homes.Developed in collaboration with Deborah’s family, the Bowelbabe collection includes candles, room diffusers and framed prints of inspirational quotes from Deborah.The candles and diffusers are Deborah’s favorite floral scents – wild peony in the Positive collection, bergamot and lavender in Defiant, and rose and patchouli in Hope.All products are available to purchase from Cancer Research UK’s online store from today (November 7th) and will be available in selected Cancer Research UK main stores at the end of November, while stocks last.Deborah’s mother Heather James said: “Deborah would have loved this collection.“Inspired by her favorite flowers and powerful words, this is a wonderful way to continue her legacy.“As a family, we were overwhelmed by everyone’s support as she spread her message of rebellious hope and we wanted the collection to celebrate this while helping to fund the cutting-edge cancer research and brilliant awareness work that is so close to her heart lay.”After being diagnosed with incurable colon cancer in 2016 at the age of 35, mother-of-two Debs educated and inspired millions of people – and her legacy lives on today.She shared her journey as a Sun columnist (Things Cancer Made Me Say) and co-host of the You, Me and the Big C podcast before she was given the honor of becoming a Dame in 2022.Despite being told she had an eight percent chance of living for another five years, she defied all the odds that were against her.Profits will go to the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK, which Deborah set up in the final weeks of her life to help more people with cancer spend time with their loved ones.The incredible amount of money raised in such a short time was a testament to how many lives Deborah touched.By the time of her death on June 28, 2022, almost £7 million had been raised.In April this year, the first groundbreaking projects funded by the Bowelbabe Fund were announced.This includes collaboration with the Institute of Cancer Research, the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and Bowel Cancer UK. Further projects will be announced in due course.Michelle Mitchell, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said: “Dame Deborah won the hearts of the nation by sharing her cancer experience with unflinching honesty and humor and tackling taboos.“Even in the most difficult times, she was determined to continue raising money and awareness, and we are honored to be able to continue the great work she began with her family.“This beautiful collection celebrates Deborah’s hope and positivity and with all profits raised going directly to the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK, it will help carry on her legacy and give hope for a better future to those affected by cancer. “Deborah was diagnosed with bowel cancer just days before Christmas 2016 after about six months of feeling tired, losing weight, having blood and having to go to the toilet “what felt like 100 times a day”.Symptoms are typical of colon cancer and may include a change in your bowel habits, blood in your stool, weight loss, stomach or back pain, fatigue, and feeling like you need to strain your back, even after using the toilet.But Deborah was keen to break the ‘pooping taboo’ to raise awareness of bowel cancer symptoms and dressed up as a poop emoji to normalize conversations about changing bowel habits.She led The Sun’s No Time 2 Lose campaign, which extended the age for bowel cancer screening to those over 50, initially only to those over 60.Bowel cancer is the second deadliest cancer in the UK, claiming 16,500 lives each year.However, according to Bowel Cancer UK, almost everyone survives the disease if it is diagnosed in its earliest stages.To donate to the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK, visit Bowelbabe.org and for news and updates follow @bowelbabefund on Instagram.
