Public transportation has never looked so stylish thanks to this all-electric, high-speed sedan that was once considered a competitor to rail travel.According to Sir Richard Branson, the 15 meter long, super-luxurious electric vehicle Superbus is set to be the future of commuting.The Superbus was designed by the Dutch Delft University of Technology under the leadership of former astronaut Professor Wubbo Ockels to carry up to 23 passengers seeking luxury and high-speed travel.F1 aerodynamicist Antonia Terzi, who worked at both Ferrari and Williams in the 2000s, was also involved in the development of the futuristic project.The idea behind the Superbus was to create a vehicle that could travel over long distances at extremely high speeds in a luxurious, limousine-like style.With a top speed of 250 km/h, it was assumed that the electric super sports car would drive on special “super lanes” but could also drive on normal roads at normal speeds.Thanks to rear-wheel steering, the Superbus even achieves a turning circle of 24 meters, perfect for tight roundabouts.Virgin tycoon Sir Richard Branson seemed impressed when he took it for a test drive in 2011.The British entrepreneur even wrote in his blog at the time that he believed the technology could one day take on the rail business by keeping up with it in terms of speed, but at the same time trumping convenience by dropping commuters right on their doorstep.According to its manufacturers in the Netherlands, where the vehicle is supposedly approved for road use, the Superbus was even designed to be energy self-sufficient.Using the United Arab Emirates as an example, it was assumed that the Superbus could be charged using solar energy during long days of intense sunlight, with enough range to cover the 75-mile journey between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in just 30 minutes.Unfortunately, the Superbus prototype is currently in the Netherlands Transport Museum, and the project appears to have been put on hold following Ockels’ death in 2014.Meanwhile, Mercedes-AMG is ready to start developing its first electric sports car as an alternative to the iconic Mercedes-AMG GT.The Vision AMG will come onto the market in 2025 complete with innovative drive technology developed in Great Britain.In other news, a trainee beautician took advantage of a loophole to avoid having to re-take her driving test after she was caught speeding 100km/h in the 40mph zone.The 20-year-old was stopped by a police officer in her Mercedes C-Class after she was seen coming out of a toll booth near the M53 motorway at high speed.And Leonardo DiCaprio’s Lamborghini, which was destroyed in The Wolf of Wall Street, is up for sale at an eye-watering price.
