But what becomes more important and what becomes our biggest focus is finding ways to work our way up as a team to finish as high as possible in those team standings,” Deuth said.Listen now and subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | RSS Feed | Omny StudioThe top two runners for Bettendorf, senior Emily See and Annabelle Everding, finished third and sixth overall with times of 19:33.2 and 20:36.9.“Emily had a good race,” Deuth said. “She knew from the get go what she was up against – Noelle Steines (Calamus-Wheatland) and Camryn Sattler (Clinton) are two very prominent runners in the Iowa high school cross country scene right now, and both have put out some great races. Emily maintained really good composure out there – she was up there with both of them for quite a while, but both pulled away from her towards the end. However, I was just proud of how she still ran a great race, and that was really helpful for us.”However, Deuth was most pleased about his team’s first place finish, and how the team can build off that with the MAC Championships just days away.“We've definitely been emphasizing the team, the team effort, and making sure that each of our individual athletes know that they all matter when it comes to the team results,” Deuth said. “What I think I appreciate about this team is there's no one individual that stands out. But these girls have truly embraced working together. On our varsity group, we have a group of five that have named themselves ‘The Wolfpack.’“We have emphasized running together -- not just when they train, but also when they race. They all have very similar finish times and whenever you see them in a race, you'll often see them together shoulder to shoulder. That's been a big difference maker for us to have a group of individuals who have figured out what it means to work together.”Last year, in Deuth’s first season with the Bettendorf girls’ team, both See and Everding finished 10th and 11th overall at the MAC Championships. Deuth expects not only them to repeat their success, but to bring along the rest of the team to the state meet.“Emily and Annabelle have consistently been our first and second runners and they both have high hopes to make it back to the state meet,” Deuth said. “I have had a conversation with them since June that it's fun to go to state as individuals, but it's a lot more fun to go to state when you can bring your team with you.”CommentsGet local news delivered to your inbox!Same teams.
