BUC-EE’S has become the largest gas station in the world.They don’t have the most businesses or the highest income, but their businesses are physically the largest in the world.Buc-ee’s was founded in 1982 by Arch Aplin III. His grandparents owned a supermarket in Harrisonburg, Louisiana and brought him into the business.He found an empty lot in Lake Jackson, Texas and started his gas station empire from there.Inspired by his nickname Beaver and the name of his dog Buck, the store was named Buc-ee’s and used a beaver as its mascot.With the help of Don Wasek, who joined Aplin as a partner, Buc-ee’s quickly took off. Cheap ice cream and clean toilets were popular with customers and helped the chain grow to 20 locations throughout Brazoria County, Texas.In 1989, they began selling Buc-ee brand clothing and other items such as fishing gear in their stores.In 2003, Buc-ee’s began to become what it is known for today.The store they opened this year in Luling, Texas, sold barbecue sandwiches, beaver nuggets, T-shirts and more.In 2006 their locations grew to 17,000 square meters and in 2009 to over 30,000 square meters.Buc-ee’s now has 40 locations and is both a tourist attraction and a gas station.Their locations have grown to over 50,000 square feet and have locations in seven states.Their locations sell household goods, fudge, beef jerky, dozens of Icee flavors and other goodies to keep drivers off the road.They also emphasize that this is not a truck stop and semi-trucks are strictly prohibited from parking in their parking spaces.Buc-ee’s currently holds several world records for its gas stations.Their Sevierville, Texas location is the largest convenience store in the world at 74,707 square feet.They also have the longest car wash in the world at 255 feet long.
