The Panthers are huge underdogs heading into Sunday's rematch against a Lions team who now boasts&nbsp;the number one run defense in the NFL."You got to use that as a challenge to the guys," said Panthers head coach Frank Reich. "We go in, we're trying to do the same thing. We want to get our run game going [and] we want to have a more balanced attack."In some ways, the Lions are perfect role models for the Panthers to get out of their current rut.Detroit is a young team, built on physicality and toughness. They started just 1-6 last season before things started to click, and they finished 9-8.Carolina would obviously love a similar turnaround this season, but it's not going to fall in their laps. They have to go out and take it."You talk about the Lions. They had to do the work to turn things around," said quarterback Bryce Young. "Us just seeing that and just saying, 'Oh, it's possible,' isn't going to allow us to do that...We have to earn the right to win games, earn the right to be successful and we have to give our all to right now."Given their style of play and "kneecap-biting" mantra, it's probably fair to expect that Detroit will try to bully Carolina as payback for last year. Coaches say the Panthers will have two paths on Sunday -- run from the fight or come out swinging."The Lions' approach is no secret," said offensive coordinator Thomas Brown. "When it comes to how they're built, their mentality [on] both sides of the ball, being physical, out-working the opponent. [It's] evident week in and week out. Our challenge is, do we answer the bell to that and respond the right way?"Gerber: Panthers rewind shows the anatomy of another 2nd half collapse1. Stop the run. The Panthers' run defense has really fallen off so far this year. They rank 29th in the league, allowing 4.7 yards per carry to opponents (they ranked 12th last season). The Lions have a top ten rushing offense, featuring David Montgomery and first round rookie Jahmyr Gibbs. Carolina needs to hold Detroit to 4.0 yards per carry or fewer.2. Attack downfield. Bryce Young was 6-for-10 last week when throwing the ball 10+ yards downfield -- his best mark as a pro. The Panthers need to open the playbook and take some shots against an aggressive Lions defense, who are likely to play tight coverage. Three pass plays of 20+ yards is the bare minimum if the Panthers want to stay in this game.3. More timely turnovers. Last week, the Panthers got two critical takeaways that halted Minnesota's scoring chances and led to 10 points the other way.
