AND OUR SAM CARTER IS LIVE OUT THERE GIVING US A LOOK AT SOME OF THE ARTISTS WE CAN EXPECT TO BE SETTING UP. SAM ABSOLUTELY. ALEX NOW, THIS FOUNTAIN HERE IS KIND OF THE GENESIS OF WHERE THE SAINT JAMES ART FESTIVAL FIRST STARTED. AND ONE OF THE MEN WHO STARTED IS THIS GUY’S UNCLE. THIS GUY’S NAME IS MARK BYRD. YOU ARE AN ARTIST, IN MY OPINION, A HISTORIAN. THIS IS SUCH A COOL LITTLE EVENT. PLEASE. I’M NOT I’M NOT OLD ENOUGH TO BE A HISTORIAN. ABSOLUTELY. BUT OF COURSE YOU’RE NOT. MAYBE I AM. HE’S 38, FOLKS. IT’S UNBELIEVABLE. THAT’S RIGHT. YOUR UNCLE AND THE DUPONT FAMILY KIND OF GOT THE BALL ROLLING ON THIS WHOLE THING. IF THIS YEAR WE’RE FEATURING MORE THAN 600 ARTISTS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND PARTS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD, COULD YOUR UNCLE EVER HAVE IMAGINED THIS GROWING TO THE LENGTHS THAT IT HAS? NO, NO. AND AND I TELL EVERYONE, IF IF MALCOLM BYRD WERE STANDING HERE TODAY, MY ARTIST, AS HE IS, HE WOULD NEVER TELL YOU THAT HE HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE FOUNDING OF THIS EVENT. THAT’S JUST HOW HUMBLE HE WAS, BECAUSE HE KNEW THAT THAT THIS EVENT WOULD WOULD EVENTUALLY TAKE CARE OF ITSELF. YEAH, IT WAS IT IT CONTINUES AT LEAST THROUGH THROUGH HIS EYES AT THE TIME IT CONTINUED BY SOMETHING CALLED MUTUAL UNVOICED CONSENT. WOW. WHICH MEANS WE ALL KNOW IT’S GOING TO KEEP GOING. WE DON’T QUESTION THE FACT THAT IT’S GOING TO SHOW UP. WE JUST OPEN OUR YARDS TO ALL THESE ARTISTS FROM ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES. AND IT’S SO IT’S YOU WERE TELLING ME THAT IN 1962 AT THE VERY OLD AGE OF NINE, YOU WERE EXHIBITING HERE. I WANT TO GET TO THAT IN JUST A SECOND. BUT HOW MANY ARTISTS WERE HERE IN 1962 THAT YOU REMEMBER? AT BEST, I CAN REMEMBER THERE WERE 14, 15 OR SO, ABOUT 15, I THINK. AND NOW WE HAVE OVER 600 AND NOW 600. YEAH. THEY EVEN CONSIDERED ME ONE. AND WITHIN THE 15. WELL, I WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THAT BECAUSE THIS PAINTING HERE. YEAH. WAS ONE OF THE YOU SAID 9 OR 10 THAT BY THE WAY, YOU PAINTED AT THE AGE OF NINE YEARS OLD. I WAS NINE YEARS OLD. YEAH. UM, TELL ME A LITTLE BIT OF THE STORY QUICKLY BEHIND THIS. WELL, IT WAS JUST FOR MY IMAGINATION, BUT. BUT MALCOLM, I WAS. I HAD BEEN PAINTING AND DRAWING FROM A VERY YOUNG AGE. THEY TELL ME, LIKE 3 OR 4 YEARS OLD. AND AT ABOUT AGE NINE, UNCLE MALCOLM SAID, MARK, I WANT YOU TO BRING YOUR WATERCOLOR TO MY ART SHOW. AND I SAID, YEAH, WHAT’S AN ART SHOW? SO HERE WE ARE AT WHAT IS AN ARCHER? WHAT IS THE COUNTRY’S BEST ART SHOW? THE COUNTRY’S BEST ART SHOW. SO MALCOLM SO I THANK YOU FOR SHARING THAT WITH US. The show has been rated one of the best in the country, and that fame is what attracted first-timers like woodworker Scott Gordon. "The St. James has a great reputation," Gordon said. "I've done other art shows and talked with other people. I've spoken to people, and they say, 'have you ever done the Saint James art festival?'" The show is expected to attract as many as 250,000 people, and those numbers made it worth Rhett Baird's time to return."This gets me in front of consumers who are ready to buy.
