Brescia University College Student’s Council, King’s University College Student’s Council, Undergraduate Engineering Society and Dentistry are seeking one councillor.By-elections are currently underway to elect students into these roles. The campaign period for FIMSSC, Science and Engineering began on Tuesday and will end on Oct. 13.&nbsp;Only students from the respective faculties will be able to vote in the fall byelections. Voting will take place on Oct. 16 and Oct. 17.&nbsp;FIMSSC, Science and Engineering must announce the by-election results by 5 p.m. on Oct. 18.The campaign period for vacant King’s positions began on Tuesday morning with elections&nbsp; taking place on Oct. 17 and Oct. 18 according to their website.&nbsp;“Vacant seats on our council mean that there are going to be groups of students whose voices may go unheard. It is important that each faculty is represented on our council floor,” said USC president Sunday Ajak in a statement to the Gazette.According to Petar Bratic, the chief returning officer at the USC, by-elections are “not necessarily abnormal.”&nbsp;Fall by-elections were also held in September 2022. This is the second year in a row that FIMS is looking to elect its entire representation through by-elections and Science, Brescia and Dentistry are looking to elect council representatives.“Since the pandemic, we’ve seen some council seats go unfilled during the winter elections,” said Ajak. “I think that there is a group of students who might have missed their opportunity to learn about the USC during the pandemic and online learning.”&nbsp;But Ajak remains enthusiastic that an increasing number of students will run for these positions.“Last year’s election engagement was outstanding. We have the highest student engagement across the country, and I have no doubt that more and more students are going to be empowered to run for these positions,” said Ajak.&nbsp;The USC told the Gazette in a statement that a faculty council’s governing documents would provide next steps if they are unable to fill a vacant position through the fall by-elections. Some faculties allow for an interim councillor to be appointed until the next election in the spring, while some positions may remain vacant.&nbsp;“Council would continue to function as is, as it is up to each faculty to fill their positions,” said the USC. “The USC only administers faculty elections if requested.”The USC’s Election Governance Committee does not have any role in the by-elections of Brescia, King’s and Dentistry — these councils will manage their elections privately.&nbsp;The BUCSC did not respond to a request for comment about their election procedures in time for publication.
