This is stated in a report by The Verge, which although citing anonymous sources, also provides some details about the abandoned project. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s Xbox plans claim that the company has even created a prototype handheld Xbox cloud game console in the past.As far as we know, some time ago Microsoft developed a lightweight version of the Xbox user interface that can work on portable devices, dedicated cloud consoles and televisions. Although this interface has appeared on some Samsung TVs, The Verge claims that it was meant for the dedicated Xbox cloud console that Microsoft was developing in 2021, which would be canceled when the company opted to focus on streaming apps.In 2021 Microsoft was also working on a stick-like device, capable of connecting to a TV to support cloud gaming. The project was known internment under the name Keystone, but then in 2022 Microsoft announced that it would “change direction from the current iteration” of the product, and then nothing more was heard of it, despite a fleeting appearance on the shelf of Phil Spencer.Problems with the UK Competition and Market Authority (CMA) and other regulators may have weighed on the decision. The CMA, in particular, blocked plans to acquire Activision Blizzard in April 2023 because it believed the company could use the brand’s games to expand its library of games in the cloud and deter competitors. Microsoft later submitted a modified acquisition plan to the CMA granting Ubisoft all rights to Activision Blizzard’s cloud gaming for 15 years.Now it seems that Microsoft has focused on providing support to third-party manufacturers, such as ASUS and Lenovo, in creating their own devices. This at least in the short term, but it is impossible to make predictions for the future.
