Please try again later.Advertisement , register or subscribe to save articles for later.Add articles to your saved list and come back to them any time.AdvertisementWA Police’s proposed four-storey station in the historic heart of Fremantle has been approved by the state government’s development assessment panel.The five-person Metro Inner-South JDAP (Joint Development Assessment Panel) considered arguments for and against the $100 million building, which will replace their current temporary digs in and around High Street.A majority of the panel voted in favour of the new South Terrace location but, predictably, City of Fremantle councillors Andrew Sullivan and Rachel Pemberton voted in the negative.Their votes mirrored the unanimous view of their fellow councillors, while the three independent planning and development professionals backed the project.During the meeting on Friday morning, concerned community members presented the argument that the building is too big and bulky for the area, that alternatives were not seriously considered and that it did not take into consideration the heritage concerns of the area.“The proposed building appears to take its cues on bulk and scale from the scale of Fremantle Hospital, which is an aberration and should not be regarded as a precedent. The bulk and scale of the proposed police complex is excessive,” argued Fremantle resident Ian Ker.Those arguments did not manage to win over three members not connected to the council, however, which means that construction workers who have already ripped up the temporary car park where the police station will sit won’t have to down tools.Such was the groundswell against the station when the City of Fremantle asked for comments an “unprecedented” number of residents jumped on the website to express their objections.AdvertisementResidents said they were disgusted a four-storey modernist edifice would be dropped into an area famous for its heritage buildings, that it would negatively impact the popular walk from the Cappuccino Strip to South Fremantle and that cop cars screaming out of the new complex would pose a risk to locals and visitors.Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge supported her councillors in their concern about the building’s size and position, but she doubted widespread community concern would stop the project.Counsellor Adin Lang, who lead the battle to stop the station, had faith the JDAP would see the merits in the No case and force WA Police to look for a more suitable location for their new cop shop.“The police station was originally budgeted at $50 million. It is now costing twice that much.
