Please try again later.Advertisement , register or subscribe to save articles for later.Add articles to your saved list and come back to them any time.AdvertisementThe acting boss of WA Police’s gang crime squad says the force is concerned about more bikie gang violence on Perth streets, revealing this week’s shooting in Baldivis allegedly involved members from the Mongols and Rebels outlaw motorcycle clubs.Detective Senior Sergeant Bevan Roe said a 53-year-old man who is a patched member of the Rebels was in custody following the drive-by shooting at the Amazon Drive house about 3pm on Thursday.Police believe up to four cars were travelling down the street when between five and 10 shots were fired from a shotgun and handgun at a member of the Mongols club who was standing outside his house.“When the shots were fired, he has immediately run back towards his address, and he’s jumped inside the fence into a neighbouring property to escape harm,” he said.Roe said police were investigating what may have sparked the shooting, including whether there were tensions between the two clubs.He said police were concerned the shooting may result in reprisals or further attacks so police had already searched homes in Port Kennedy, Tuart Hill and Gosnells, where the 53-year-old Rebel was arrested.“That’s why we are assigning every resource we have at our disposal to target these gangs,” he said.“As evidenced by the number of splintered doors today, we will continue to use the full suite of powers available to us to disrupt the antisocial and violent behaviours associated with outlaw motorcycle gangs.”Roe said police would not tolerate gang violence spilling onto the streets and officers would continue to conduct raids at bikie homes and premises over the weekend.Advertisement“The incident shows a blatant disregard for the safety of our community; to have neighbours cowering in their homes and fearing for their safety is completely unacceptable,” he said.“The message to outlaw motorcycle gangs is clear. If the gang crime squad pays you a visit, it is your fault.”Earlier on Friday West Australian Police Commissioner Col Blanch spoke at a press conference where he unveiled WA Police’s new suite of crime-fighting vehicles.Shortly after the press conference, one of WA Police’s new petrol-powered nine-tonne $1.1 million BearCat armoured vehicles was deployed to help with the shooting investigation.Blanch said the BearCats and two new $1.2 million rigid-hull inflatable boats would be used in serious incidents such as this.“The assets behind me will most likely be used to respond to ... a very small minority in Western Australia who still think it’s OK to use firearms in our community and be part of an outlaw motorcycle gang,” he said.“We won’t tolerate it, and we will be very tough on crime when it comes to these sort of criminals.”WA Police Minister Paul Papalia said the state’s force, including units like the tactical response group, which uses the BearCats, were better equipped than ever before.“Specialist officers, such as those in the tactical response group, frequently respond to a range of high-risk threats across the state, which is why the WA government continues to ensure it’s resourced with the best operational assets,” he said.Start the day with a summary of the day’s most important and interesting stories, analysis and insights.
