The River Valley Film Society is exhilarated to announce our new multi-year partnership with Porter + Craig Film and Media Distribution, which is headquartered in Beverly Hills, California. This deal will transform the Fort Smith International Film Festival into a film market, meaning movies screened at the festival will have a chance for distribution. A distributor releases, licenses and positions a film in the marketplace maximizing all of the possibilities to generate revenue. Founding members Sgt. Major Keith L. Craig (Retired) and Jeff Porter will be the opening night keynote speakers and will offer a distribution deal to the top 5 films at the market.“You have to understand, this partnership is huge,” exclaims Brandon Chase Goldsmith, the festival’s executive director. “The film society’s goal is to grow our region’s creative economy and Porter + Craig will propel the Fort Smith International Film Festival into the Mid-South’s premiere film market with the closest other market being South by Southwest in Austin.”Film Festival Pre-EventsThursday August 24 - America’s most unique music style will be the star of a multifaceted public kickoff event for the upcoming Fort Smith International Film Festival. On August 24 5pm, the Fort Smith Museum of History will host a special evening featuring the Arkansas premier of the documentary, “The Birth and History of Western Swing” followed by a dance featuring Arkansas’ ONLY Western Swing band, Western Swing RULES. "For the first time the film festival is having pre-events," explains Brandon Chase Goldsmith, executive director of the Fort Smith International Film Festival. "When The Birth and History of Western Swing was submitted it was a natural choice to partner with the Fort Smith Museum of History and Robert Huston's band to create a memorable evening of music, dancing, and film!"Across the river, starting at 6pm at the King Opera House in Van Buren, the pre-events continue with Kevin Croxton’s Indiana Jones fan film made with his Oliver Springs Elementary music club students and feature local, regional, and international high school films. One of the showcased films, The Box by Carter Stoudt from Souderton Area High School in Pennsylvania, tells the story of an incredible day of driving, hiking, and drone flying, which leads to finding a mysterious box with over a century of family history. This good Samaritan can't rest until he finds and delivers this treasure trove of family artifacts to the rightful owner. What could go wrong?Kevin Croxton’s “Indiana Jones and the Treasure of the Aztecs” is a fan film created by the Oliver Springs Music Club. Set in 1958, Indiana Jones takes up an unfinished quest from his late father-in-law, Abner Ravenwood, which turns into a race against time to find a powerful Aztec treasure before the Soviets do. The film is a tribute to the Indiana Jones Franchaise, and has a cameo from Actress Karen Allen, reprising her role as Marion from the Indiana Jones films.Friday Opening NightFriday August 25 – The Opening Night Reception at TempleLive! kicks off at 5pm with the NWA Screenwriter Collective, who will be having a meeting in the conference room open to anyone interested in joining. Starting with an opening address from Mayor George McGill, the evening’s screenings will demonstrate the Fort Smith International Film Festival’s mission. Highlighting our international connections, I wanted to be Vittorio Gassman by Cisterna filmmaker Cristian Scardigno shows off Fort Smith’s sister city in Italy.After a keynote from the founders of Porter + Craig Film and Media, we will showcase regional movies. Van Buren’s Jason Pitts’ When The Stairs Creak is based on the song, "Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men, and it tells the heartbreaking story of Sarah and Brady Saxon. Marc Crandall from Fayetteville tells day in the life of an elderly gentleman, Hank Crute, as he deals with the trials and tribulations of a resident of Spring Valley retirement home, bad food, conniving females and an unexpected Doctor's visit in Banana Triangle Six. Little Rocks’ Daniel Wingfield film is based in 1993, when the murder rate in Little Rock, Arkansas was one of the highest in the nation, surpassing that of New York and Los Angeles. LOWLIFES is a personal story from this era which explores why a young kid would be drawn to gang life, and why it continues to be a force in our communities today. Indigenous filmmaker Christopher Coursey from Tahlequah presents the River Woe, a Native American original short drama story of how easy it is to lose everything. Set in the present day, a Native American man gets laid off and with no help must go fishing to provide food for his family.2023 Fort Smith International Film FestivalSaturday August 26 – The Fort Smith International Film Festival is an experience with films playing in four rooms starting at 10am and going till 11pm with a midnight After Party featuring the Robert Rauch band at the historic masonic TempleLive!
