Canada is bringing its massive street hockey festival back to Cloverdale.The City of Surrey made the announcement a few days ago via press release.“Very excited to be a part of a national event that is as Canadian as you can get,” remarked Paul Orazietti, the executive director of the Cloverdale BIA. “And proud of our team.”Play On! Canada runs the biggest street hockey tournament series across the country.Mayor Brenda Lock said she was proud to both support and welcome back Play On! to the city.“Our city thrives on the positive impact such events bring, showcasing our welcoming and vibrant communities,” she added.Orazietti, who also sits on the organizing committee, said now that the official announcement’s been given, the heavy lifting begins.“We are actively looking for sponsors and teams,” he explained. “With respect to challenges, we need to work on rapid deployment of the rinks to avoid road closures without any activity.”Play On! plans to up their games this time around. Last time, in 2022, there were 98 teams at the Cloverdale event made up of just under 1,000 players. This time around, they want the Cloverdale event to have 200 teams with about 4,000 players. Play On! believes that many participants will attract about 10,000 spectators to Cloverdale’s downtown core.“Play On! Canada’s extensive national level coverage through TV, social media, and radio, will play a significant role in promoting Surrey as a premier sports tourism destination across the country,” noted the release.SEE ALSO: Massive street hockey fest may be returning to CloverdaleSEE ALSO: Play On! He anticipates, with the help of City Hall, Cloverdale could hit that magic number of about $80K. He said Parks and Rec. has offered $5,000 already and the BIA will kick in $7,500. He noted that funding will also be coming in from both the Province and the feds.“The BIA came onboard early as an event sponsor and we are in discussions with numerous businesses in the city of Surrey,” he added. “Having the city as an anchor sponsor gives us a strong base to work from.”Orazietti confirmed that no official date has been set.“We are targeting the month of June, 2024.”Orazietti told the Cloverdale Reporter in August that all of the pre-event planning and groundwork was laid in 2022 before the previous Play On! tourney. So the committee is piggybacking off that event in terms of the organizational framework for the event’s implementation.Play On!
