Michael Barber, 44, of Penhook was operating the boat when it struck multiple fallen trees while he was navigating along the shoreline of a cove, according to 1st Sgt. Tim Dooley with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.Barber was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger on the boat survived with minor injuries."The way he went through the trees, it would have been hard to survive that," Dooley said.The incident is still under investigation.&nbsp;It has been a particularly deadly year on Smith Mountain Lake. This will be the third boating fatality on the lake this year. Two Danville men died when their boat capsized Jan. 2.There have also been two deaths reported from individuals falling into the water from a dock. A man from Portland, Oregon, drowned after falling into the lake from a dock May 15.
