She added that having the voice of the harvester adds an extra perspective that is valuable.“It’s unique in the sense that because this company is owned by Indigenous people, there’s multiple layers,” Fiske said. “The company is owned by a particular tribe, the Passamaquoddy, but the harvesting is done by a much larger Wabanaki group, that includes people who came across the Canadian border.”Fiske, who has been the library director for four years, said she’s been working for a year to put this event together and first began speaking with Ghertner, in February.“It’s an area in which a lot of people don’t know much of anything, and what they do know is often incorrect,” Fiske said. “... offering a perspective from the [Indigenous] people themselves, rather than from the white-centric view, was really important to me.”Fiske said it’s important for the community to be exposed to these stories because it will help people make more informed decisions about supporting Indigenous-owned companies, which are “truly living the work,” as opposed to larger industrial organizations.Jamie Browder can be reached at 352-1234 ext. 1427 or jbrowder@keenesentinel.comLog InKeep it Clean.
