Fish and Game Commissioner John Caveney said Wednesday. “The bulls are out looking for girlfriends.“They are on the move. A moose could move into Cheshire County or one of our towns because hopefully he’s going to find himself a girlfriend.”Caveney said there have been a few moose sightings in the county in recent days. These animals can weigh more than 1,000 pounds and be 6 feet tall at the shoulder, so people should give them a wide berth.“If somebody gets in their way, they can get a little cantankerous,” said Caveney, a Spofford resident whose commission district takes in the entire county.N.H. Fish and Game biologists on Wednesday tranquilized a moose along Winchester Street in Keene, loaded it onto a trailer and dropped it off in the more rural Marlow/Washington area, Keene police Capt. Steven Tenney said.He said the animal is “safe and healthy.”It may be easier to spot a moose this time of year, but wildlife biologists throughout the Northeast continue to be concerned about the species’ future.The moose population has declined from about 8,000 in New Hampshire in the 1990s to less than 4,000 currently, N.H. Fish and Game says on its website.The population is dropping because climate change has shortened winters, which has led to increases in the prevalence of ticks that can weaken or even kill a moose, the department says.They are also suffering from a loss of habitat and brainworm, a parasite that can spread to them from deer.Linda Flagg, The Sentinel’s business and human resources manager, spotted the bull moose near Chili’s in the Monadnock Marketplace on Tuesday. It had some leafy greenery trailing from its antlers.The next morning, Katie Bemis sent The Sentinel footage from her home security camera on Fairbanks Street of a moose lumbering through her yard.A bull moose also visited Winchester School on Sept. 21, prompting recess to be moved indoors until it left the property.Moose rutting season extends from mid-September to mid-October.That is also when many people are out and about looking at fall foliage.“Drivers should be prepared to see and react quickly to moose on or near roads,” the department said in a recent news release. “While moose/vehicle collisions can happen at all times of the year, fall is a time of increased moose activity and therefore accidents.“In 2022, 58 moose were killed by vehicles in New Hampshire, which is a slight reduction from the 72 moose deaths as a result of car collisions in 2021.”Traffic accidents involving the large animals can also do major damage to vehicles and injure occupants.Sentinel staff writer Olivia Belanger contributed to this report.Log InKeep it Clean.
