Ben Ray Luján and Martin Heinrich and U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández are sponsoring the measure to enable impacted residents to continue drawing compensation from a nearly $4 billion federal recovery fund.New Mexico lawmakers obtained the recovery money last year through spending bills.It is intended to cover damage caused by the blaze and post-fire flooding on the enormous burn scar.The congressional measure to extend the deadline for filing claims is a recognition that FEMA is not authorized to do so, the three said in a statement.“With payments now being disbursed, it’s critical that New Mexicans have the time they need to apply for the compensation that they deserve.” Luján said.The Democratic lawmakers and governor have pushed to have the federal government bear the recovery costs of the mammoth wildfire that devoured more than 500 homes and scorched 341,000 acres.Two prescribed burns by the U.S. Forest Service went out of control and merged into the ravenous blaze that raged through San Miguel, Mora and Taos counties. So far, more than 2,160 residents have applied for compensation, and FEMA has dispensed $84 million to cover 327 claims, according to the agency’s most recent figures.In a statement, Leger Fernández said the bill will not only extend the claims period but will ensure victims have their flood insurance covered through 2028.“Unfortunately, the fire was not the end of the heartache for our communities,” she said. “The burn scar created by this man-made disaster has left our people in the path of dangerous floods. I will continue to push the claims office to speed up the payments these victims desperately need and bring justice to our communities.”Lengthening the time to pursue aid is necessary because cascading effects, such as flooding, from the wildfire are expected to go on for years, Mora County Commissioner Veronica Serna said in a statement.“This will give the victims of this disaster the opportunity to file claims for future damages as we experience future flooding events due to the severe burn scar,” Serna said.Takeawaysu U.S. Sens.
