Skip to contentRoof top tents are great for comfort, staying clean, and effortless setup. But what isn’t so great about them is how thick they are sitting on top of your vehicle. This negatively affects your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and to some it may not be appealing to the eye as well.Roof top tents have evolved rapidly as competition heats up between emerging companies. A byproduct of this competition is manufacturers making thinner roof top tents to appeal to consumers. Not only do they look awesome, but are also practical too since they are more aerodynamic.The thinnest roof top tents available are Go Fast Camper, Roofnest Falcon, FSR Odyssey, Tepui Low-Pro 2, and the FSR Adventure GS.I will compare how tall each tent is when closed as well as some of their features and specs! I wanted to give a handful of options to look at, including some hardshell and some softshell styles.When it comes to the thinnest RTTs possible, hardshell style tents have the advantage by far. Their pop-up or clamshell design allows them to be much slimmer than a foldout tent, which effectively doubles its thickness when packed up.However, there are some really solid options for both RTT styles if you’re looking for a minimalistic and sleek look.The Roofnest Falcon is one of the thinnest roof top tents on the market at just 6.5 inches when closed.This sleek aluminum shelled RTT sleeps two campers and brings a lot of value for the price. You can mount loading bars to it for hauling extra gear too which is a great offering. I love the look of this model and it has some great features to back it up.Talking a bit about the specs, it has a telescoping ladder, a condensation mat, honeycomb floor design, and a 2.75″ thick mattress.I like all of Roofnests’ products because I feel you get the most bang for your buck. If you’re looking for a super slim and good looking RTT, this one might be my favorite!The GFC is the thinnest roof top tent ever made at only 6″ thick when closed.Now this innovative RTT comes with a hefty price tag and for good reason. It isn’t an ordinary tent and really isn’t comparable to its competitors.The GFC can be mounted directly to your vehicle and serve as a roof rack. You can also mount the tent onto a crossbar system of your own as well. You can buy a “cabana” to sit under the tent if you have a truck best, which is comparable to a truck topper or camper shell.The starting weight for the tent is 275 pounds depending on the vehicle. The mattress is two inches thick and varies in size depending on a full-size or midsize truck. Mid-size trucks are 50″ x 90″ and full-size trucks have a 56″ x 90″ mattress.This is a very exciting RTT option with many upgrades that are far different than any of its competitors. I see these tents on the road quite frequently.Its insanely durable build and construction ensure many years of use down the road. This tent is made in Montana, USA, and Go Fast Campers takes all of the necessary steps to make the highest quality product.The FSR Odyssey has two models, a 49″ and a 55″, but both are only 7.1 inches when closed.I really like how this RTT looks and its price point is very reasonable. They are both super durable since the shell has an aluminum honeycomb plate and the body is made of 3 layers of 150D Poly-Oxford material.The mattress is only 1.25 inches of high-density foam, so a mattress topper may be in order. The tent is reasonably light and has the option to add a loading rack for gear that can hold up to 250 pounds.The construction of this tent is pretty solid and for at its price point, I think it is a great deal. It is super slim and I love the look of this model with the gear rack mounted to it!The Tepui Low-Pro 2 is just 7 inches thick at its lowest point and 10″ inches thick at its tallest point.I had to add a softshell RTT into the mix! Some campers prefer this design because of the smaller footprint when closed works best for their set up.The Low-Pro 2 is extremely lightweight at 105 pounds and has a relatively small footprint to its counterparts on this list. To minimize its height, it has a slanted design which is why one side is taller than the other.Tepui is a great RTT brand and their tents include some of the best features in the industry. You get a telescoping ladder, 4-season use, 2″ 40D hard density foam mattress, and breathable canopy fabric.It’s impressive that this compact and slim RTT can also be used in all seasons. Tepui is one of those brands that all roof tent users know about and will likely own one at some point.The Adventure GS roof top tent by Freespirit Recreation is just 9 inches thick in both its 49″ and 55″ models.I really like this model. It is softshell but has a very different design from its counterparts. It is assisted by gas struts as a hardshell RTT would be but doesn’t fold and double in size when opened as a typical softshell model does.I have seen this tent many times in person and it is WAY slimmer than my foldable RTT. It packs a 2.75″ high-density foam mattress, has a weight capacity of 750-pounds, telescoping ladder, and the body is made of 600D rip-stop fabric.FSR makes fantastic RTTs and this is one of their most creative! The gas struts are a nice touch and that low profile of just 9″ inches is very noticeable as you pass it by.Those are the thinnest RTTs you can buy! I attempted to give a very diverse set of tents while maintaining the goal of presenting only the slimmest of tents.I think buying a super slim RTT is great for many reasons. Whether it be purely for looks or a more functional purpose, both make complete sense to me.I have no biases with any of these tents and am simply trying to offer my best advice after endless hours of research on the topic.
