A colourful season of concerts by the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra will be preceded by a little ‘Bach in the Barnyard.’Red Deerians will get a free sampling of Bach’s “supremely spectacular” music when it’s performed by a chamber orchestra of RDSO musicians at 7 p.m. on Oct. 14 at Heritage Ranch in Red Deer.The now standing-room only concert (registration through Showpass.com) is one of three no-admission-charge community concerts that the RDSO is planning alongside its new season of six regular subscription concerts for 2023-24.Director Claude Lapalme believes music is for everyone, so it’s important to share it broadly whenever possible.Since the RDSO received some grant money this year for community concerts, he’s pleased to be able to offer two other free performances — a Nov. 11 Remembrance Day concert at the Red Deer Museum of music written in a prisoner of war camp, and a spring concert, with a date to be announced.Hearing live professional music can be unaffordable for some people, he added, but “for artists, music is a communal act; They play it together and they like sharing it.” Lapalme hopes these concerts will reach those who might not otherwise hear an orchestra play.The RDSO’s regular subscription season kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 21 with the Oktoberfest concert. It’s described as “a feast of folk song and brilliant sound.” Hungarian folk music by Brahms is on the program, as well as Ernest Bloch’s Concerto Grosso, and part of Czech composer Bedrich Smetana’s Ma Vlast, a sweeping and epic tribute to his homeland. Lapalme said “It will be a lovely travelogue.”On Nov. 18, the RDSO’s strings players will perform the Dancing Phoenix concert, featuring a title piece written by Lapalme. Dancing Phoenix was one of 60 tunes he composed for free, on-request during the pandemic. This work for strings, vibraphone and harp has only been performed once before — by the Edmonton Chamber Orchestra. Mozart’s ever popular Eine Kleine Nachtmusik is also on the program, as is Lars-Eric Larsson’s virtuosic Trombone Concertino.The Winter Wonderland concert on Dec. 9 will consist of a festival of timeless seasonal classics, played in a collaboration with young musicians from the Red Deer Royals band. Lapalme said this tuneful celebration is always an uplifting experience for audiences.Three months into the new year, soprano soloist Helen Hassinger will help the RDSO ratchet up the drama at the Night at the Opera concert on March 16. Expect to hear soaring music about love and death and Bugs Bunny — or at least the Barber of Seville overture that Looney Tunes made extra famous. Some Puccini and Respighi will also be played.On April 27, the RDSO will present the Baroque chamber group Rosa Barocca and cellist Elinor Frey in the Let’s Cellobrate concert, which will include a Vivaldi tune from their collaborative Juno Award-winning album Early Italian Cello Concertos. Two pieces from Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach will also be performed at the Gaetz Memorial United Church.(The other concerts will be at the Red Deer Polytechnic Arts Centre).Just a week later (on May 4), the RDSO’s season-closing May the Fourth Be With You pops concert will feature the movie music of Star Wars composer John Williams.Lapalme said the orchestra is still in recovery-mode since the pandemic and could use more corporate sponsorships.
