(Photo by Ian Gustafson/ Advocate staff)Red Deer Rebels defenceman Quentin Bourne came into the 2023-24 Western Hockey League season with confidence and it’s paid off.In 2022-23, the 17-year-old from Lawndale, California was in and out of the lineup appearing in just 31 games. He was also held off the scoresheet notching just three points.But with his rookie season out of the way and a full offseason of training, Bourne has looked like a new player.“I took two months off [in the offseason], It’s a long year. I knew I had the skill on the ice it was more about getting my body ready off the ice putting on weight and muscle so I was prepared,” he said.“This year I’ve come in with more confidence. I know what to expect and that confidence has gone a long way for me.”Through the first three games, he’s been a regular in the lineup often appearing on the top unit of the powerplay. He’s potted just one point but the defenceman led the Rebels in points during the preseason with five points in three games.“It’s the confidence in myself and the confidence the coaching staff has instilled in me. They trust me out there and obviously that helps me,” he said.“Knowing that I have the skillset and that I’m good enough to be out there that’s the main thing.”Standing at just 5’7 and 158 pounds Bourne may be small in stature but over the summer he put on five pounds of muscle.So far, he said it’s made a difference out on the ice.“For me, I’m not going to be laying the big hits but it’s muscle put on where I’m staying fast. That’s a big part of my game is my speed and quickness to be first on the puck,” he said.Bourne spent the offseason in California but did a little bit of travelling including visiting his father in Texas. He worked with his skill coaches as well as trained alongside some friends who play college hockey in the NCAA.He also has a skating coach that he goes to who helped him improve his skating abilities, speed, and fine tune some other skills.When Bourne arrived in Red Deer for training camp, he came in with the mindset that nothing is promised but rather how you perform.And perform he did notching three goals and two assists in three preseason games earning a bigger role on the Rebels.“I had a good camp and once the season came I was in the lineup because I had a good camp. It wasn’t any known promise. No one is promised anything here. It’s your work ethic and how you perform,” he added.“[Last year] was a learning experience and something I didn’t want to experience again. I wanted to be in the lineup every night playing 15-20 minutes, and I wanted to run the powerplay.“That was my mindset coming in that I was going to do all of those things. So far, I’ve done that and I want to keep that going.”His consistent effort caught the eye of the Rebels coaching staff and head coach Derrick Walser.“He works hard and sometimes work ethic goes a long way,” Walser said.“There are still things he’s going to learn but I think he’s been really putting in the effort in practice and trying to get better every day.“The big thing with him is sometimes less is more. We’ve been trying to teach him that and I’ve been there. I was a 17-year-old kid run and gun wanting to play offence.
